Common grading scales in the United States

Schools in the United States do not share one official scale. Three setups are widespread. The A–F scale awards an A at 90% and up, a B at 80%, a C at 70% and a D at 60%. The plus/minus scale splits every letter in three, for example an A− at 90%, an A at 93% and an A+ at 97%. A common 7-point scale places the cutoffs higher, with an A at 93% and up, a B at 85%, a C at 77% and a D at 70%.

Which one applies depends on the school, district or the course syllabus. Treat the tables here as common defaults and compare them with your own policy.

GPA points

A grade point average assigns points to each letter: 4.0 for an A, 3.0 for a B, 2.0 for a C, 1.0 for a D and 0 for an F. Plus and minus grades add or take away a few tenths, for instance 3.7 for an A− and 3.3 for a B+. Some schools weight honors or AP courses higher or give an A+ 4.3 points; the chart uses the common unweighted 4.0 values.

Questions and answers

Which scale is the most common?

The 10-point A–F scale, where an A starts at 90%, is the most widespread in the United States, often with plus and minus grades added.

What is a 93% in letters?

A 93% is an A on the A–F and plus/minus scales and an A on the 7-point scale, worth 4.0 GPA points.

Is a 59% a D or an F?

On the common scales a D starts at 60%, so 59% is an F. Some schools set a 65% passing line, so check your policy.

Can I use my own scale?

Yes. Open the easy grader and choose Custom to name your grades and set the starting percentages.
