How a weighted grade works
In a weighted grade, each category contributes a share of the final result. A final exam worth 30% has three times the influence of homework worth 10%. The formula is simple: multiply every score by its weight, add the products and divide by the sum of the weights.
For example, homework 92% (weight 20), quizzes 81% (weight 30), midterm 76% (weight 20) and final 88% (weight 30) give (92 × 20 + 81 × 30 + 76 × 20 + 88 × 30) / 100 = 84.3%. On the standard scale that is a B.
Using the calculator
Each row is one category or assignment. Type the points you earned and, if the work was not graded out of 100, the points possible. Leave “Out of” empty to treat the score as a percentage. Then give the row a weight. Weights can be percentages or any numbers you like: weights of 2, 3 and 5 behave exactly like 20, 30 and 50 percent.
If your weights do not add up to 100, the calculator tells you and scales the result for you, so a missing category never produces a nonsense grade. Add as many rows as you need, remove the ones you do not, and use “Reset to example” to start again.
Weighted versus simple average
A simple average treats all scores as equal. If a student earned 100% on a small quiz and 60% on the final exam, the simple average of those two is 80%, but with the final counting for 70% the weighted result is 72%. When your course has categories with different weights, only the weighted average matches the gradebook.
Looking for the other direction? The final grade calculator works out what a student still needs on the exam, and the easy grader turns a test score into a grade for the whole class.
Questions and answers
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
The calculator divides by the sum of your weights, so the result is still a correct weighted average of the rows you entered. A note shows the sum so you can spot a typing mistake.
Can I enter points instead of percentages?
Yes. Type the points earned in “Score” and the points possible in “Out of”. The row is converted to a percentage before it is weighted.
Does a missing score count as zero?
No. A row without a score is ignored. If a missing assignment should count as 0, type 0 in that row.
Is anything stored on a server?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the numbers stay on your device.
Which scale gives the letter grade?
The one you pick above the rows. The A–F, plus/minus and 7-point scales are common defaults, not official rules, so check them against your own syllabus.
